Motorola MBP27T Digital Video Monitor Review

Motorola MBP27T Digital Video Monitor

Motorola are well known for their electronic devices. They have been trading for nearly 100 years. They come from the United States of America and have offices all over the world. You probably know them best for selling mobile phones. They also make some pretty decent baby monitors.

The Motorola MBP27T Digital Video Monitor is their latest baby monitor on the market (as of early 2015). It has the basics covered well, as you would expect. It comes with a 2.4 inch (6 cm) LCD screen, clear sound and video signal, a nifty no touch temperature sensor, infrared night vision and a signal range of up to 300 metres.

The MBP27T baby monitor comes equipped with a 2.4-inch (6 cm) colour LCD screen.  This allows you to see your child as they sleep. For night time pictures the unit has an infrared mode. The camera unit uses LEDs that are unlit, to send black and white images. This is important as some other baby monitors use lit LEDs and can keep babies awake.

You can remotely control the MBP27T’s camera to tilt and pan. This allows you to fine-tune the image you want to see. This is also handy if your little one has a tendency to move around their cot or bed. The camera has a swivel base. It can turn 360 degrees. You can add up to three more additional cameras. Another handy feature if you want to see a different angle in the same room or monitor additional rooms.

No-touch temperature sensor

One of the great features of this baby monitor is the no touch temperatures sensor. You can measure the temperature of your baby, of their milk or food, or even their bath water. By pointing the infrared sensor at their head, you see if they have a temperature, without making them (more) uncomfortable.

The MBP27T digital video monitor will indicate the sound level from the camera unit through LEDs. The stronger the level of noise, the more lights light up. A handy feature, if for some reason, you have to mute the sound temporarily or live in a noisy household.

Two way talk back

The camera unit also sends audio signals. It also comes with two-way talk back facility. This lets you sing or speak to your child from the comfort of your armchair. A helpful feature if you don’t need to go into their room, but hearing your voice will calm them.

The unit uses the 2.4 GHz Frequency Hopping Spread wireless signal Spectrum technology (FHSS). This technology gives a more reliable wireless signal. It has a better range, less prone to interference and signal drop out. The Motorola Digital Video Monitor MBP27T encrypts the audio signal. This makes it harder for eavesdroppers to intercept the signal.

Signal range of up to 300 metres

The unit has a signal range of up to 300 metres. This doesn’t mean it will work to 300 metres in all homes. Dependant on how many floors, and walls, you may get less. However, up to 300 metres is pretty standard for a digital baby monitor.

If the parent and camera unit are not able to connect, or they go out of range, you will be alerted. Thinking you have a signal, when you don’t, is not what any parent wants.

What are the downsides?

There aren’t that many downsides to report for the Motorola digital video monitor MBP27T. A few have said the no-touch temperature sensor isn’t that accurate. But a few have said its pretty accurate. Don’t you love the general public! In my opinion, it’s a useful feature for checking the temperature of milk, food or bathwater.

I would recommend using a digital in ear temperature sensor to measure your child’s temperature. Paramedics and staff in hospitals use these. I’ve seen this first hand. Taking a temperature reading from the forehead is not the most accurate way to measure your child’s temperature.

The only other ‘downside’ to mention are a couple of features  it doesn’t have. It has not got a night light or built-in lullabies. However, Motorola don’t advertise that it does. I think some people are expecting the moon on a stick! If you want a baby monitor with night light and built-in  lullabies, you will have to invest a little more of your cash for these options.

Pros

The Motorola MBP27T digital video monitor has a clear 2.4 inch (6 cm) LCD colour display. The sound and video quality is sharp, including the infrared night vision. It is simple and easy to set up. The no touch temperature sensor is a nice feature. It will come in handy when feeding or bathing your child. It has an out of range alert and remote pan and tilt function for the camera unit. If you want to add up to three more cameras, you can.

Cons

The only one worth mentioning is the no touch temperature sensor. When measuring your child’s forehead, it isn’t 100 percent accurate according to some. Please see my advice on this in the ‘downsides’ section.

Summary

The Motorola MBP27T Digital Video Monitor is a very good video baby monitor. The sound and video quality is impressive. The no-touch temperature sensor is a great addition. I suspect you will use this quite a bit. The  wireless secure digital signal has a good range of up to 300 metres.

The night vision, out of range warning, and two way talk back are standard features. This baby monitor offers them with no fuss. It gets on with its job. It’s not worth mentioning again the downside. You can read that above in cons section if you wish. The features it has, the build quality and price make this a highly recommended baby monitor.
